About Time Signature

Time Signature was born from a simple reflection: dancers are part of the music, just like any other musician. In many cultures, learning the music means learning the dance, and vice versa. Yet in a lot of contemporary dance styles, dancers rarely develop an understanding of music that goes beyond the sensory experience of moving to it.

By traveling around the world teaching for over 10 years, we realized that overall, people struggle to understand what music is. There is no actual program or methodology that makes the segue between them and the actual material musicians use to study music.

Time Signature was created to bridge that gap: giving dancers the tools to understand the mechanics of music and apply that knowledge directly to movement. The goal is for dancers to deepen their understanding of music, elevate their skills, and broaden their perspective.

About the course

When you sign up, you get access to a progressive learning path containing blocks of content. Each block is meant to be watched, studied thoroughly, and put to practice before moving to the next one. Our methodology is based on the “slow and steady” philosophy, because great results come from dedication, consistency, and patience.

This is not a dance tutorial platform to learn about a particular dance style. Moves and technique are part of the dancer’s language, but understanding the context of this language is what ultimately helps you speak with confidence. And this context, for dancers, is music.

We aim to educate dancers on all music-related topics, from music theory to music production, ear training and much more. Time Signature is here to help you master your body through the understanding of music, in every way, shape and form.

Teacher

Kwamé Ba

Kwamé Ba is a professional dancer, teacher, pianist and composer from Martinique, based in France.

Of Senegalese origin having grown up in the Caribbean, Kwamé is deeply rooted in Black music and dances. His artistic journey began at an early age in a household driven by movement. At the age of seven, he fell deeply in love with hip-hop and soon began exploring the different dance styles that emerged from the movement. He later became involved in salsa, participating in a world-class teenage competition in Puerto Rico. As a teenager he had the opportunity to travel to New York, where he continued taking open classes in hip-hop, modern jazz, contemporary, and other dance styles.

As a dancer he has won several of the most prestigious competitions in house dance such as: Juste Debout (2018) and Summer Dance Forever (2022 & 2023). He has over 10 years’ experience as an international teacher, traveling around the world to give workshops, judge competitions and teach private classes.

Musically he began producing music at the age of 18, quickly releasing music on international labels. He later took up the piano and developed his musical practice further. Currently he tours as a jazz musician, playing in venues and festivals such as Jazz à Vienne, Paradiso (NL), Barbican Centre (UK), etc., performing his own music and bringing movement and sound together in a unique fashion.

As the co-founder of Time Signature, Kwamé Ba remains an eternal student, dedicated to building bridges between the dance world and the music world.
